Check Yes or No

March 9th, 2017

I have a love-hate relationship with checks. On one hand, the pattern can be menswear chic and fresh. On the other hand, it can be expected — or even worse, remind me of a server’s uniform from any restaurant in Portland. But I like to remain open minded about checks (otherwise the hipsters win, and no one wants that.)

That said, when I spotted this checked shirt/shirt dress at Zara, I was perplexed. I loved the idea of an oversized shirt to wear with fun hosiery or open over jeans and a tee. But would I have to start drinking craft brews and ask my boyfriend to regrow his beard? That seemed like a lot of work for a dress.

Luckily, a few choice styling tricks takes this checked frock from Mumford & Sons to modern in minutes. I started with fishnet tights, which have seen a fabulous resurgence over the past few months, even popping up under ripped jeans and paired with voluminous sweaters. Next, a waist-cinching belt creates a figure-flattering silhouette. Spiky booties and oversized sunglasses complete the glam look.

Yes, you can take classic patterns from “ho-hey” to “oh heyyy” with a few key accessories. Why not give it a try this spring?
