Fall 2018’s ’80s Redux — and How to Rock It
September 28th, 2018
I’m, like, totally freaking out this month about the bold colors, patterns, textures and details inspired by the raddest decade. There’s no denying fashion is having a serious love affair with the 80s right now. The Fall 2018 runways brought back all manner of “Dynasty”-era trends, from opulent jewel tones to metallic overload. And don’t even get me started on neon, which looks so fresh when paired with a pop of white.
Fashionistas everywhere are hitting the streets in strong shoulders, leopard prints, big belts, logo everything, fuchsia and more. But you don’t have to be a style star celeb to pull of these vintage-to-today looks. There are plenty of ways to introduce this throwback trend into your wardrobe without looking like you’re living in oblivion.
There are two ways to approach this strong trend.
- Choose one piece that nods to the decade — then style a modern look around it. This will ensure your outfit doesn’t go off the rails into “Heathers” territory.
- On the flip side, try a few subtle ’80s trends in a single look. And the key word is subtle.
While the first option is pretty straight-forward the second is a bit trickier — but can absolutely be achieved by careful curation. This look from Twigs nods to it-girl ’80s mainstays of patent leather, light-hued denim, off-the-shoulder tops and unexpected pops of bling. But incorporating those details in a modern way (like these slim-fit jeans and subtle appliqué) evokes ’80s nostalgia without feeling too Material Girl.
Looking for a few ’80’s must haves to add to your closet? Here are a few fab trends to try:
- Neon Colors
- Shoulder Pads or Strong Shoulders
- Patent Leather
- Light & Acid-Wash Denim
- Animal Prints and Snakeskin
- Embellished Garments
- Designer Logo Bags, Shoes, Belts and Coats
- Belt Bags
- Western Influences
- Power Suits
- Cropped Tops, Sweatshirts and Jackets
- Metallics, Sequins and Lamé
- Ankle Socks
- Statement Jewelry
- Sheer Black Hosiery
I say embrace the return of the decade of decadence and have a little fun incorporating it into your fall wardrobe. After all, fashion is all about expression and personal style.
Otherwise, what’s your damage?
